The viol and cello Workshop

Our luthier’s workshop specialises in the design, making, restoration and maintenance of viols and bowed string instruments.

We approach every instrument with the same level of care and precision, whether it is an historical instrument requiring sensitive restoration, an instrument in need of repair, or a new instrument built from scratch. Our work combines traditional craftsmanship, precision and acoustic research, with the aim of respecting the unique character of each instrument and each musician.

Instrument Making

We design and make our instruments entirely in our own workshop, paying particular attention to the selection of woods, construction, proportions, finishing and acoustic adjustment.

Each instrument is made as a unique piece. From the first stages of construction to the final adjustments, we seek a balance between sound quality, tonal richness, playability and individual character.

Restoration of Historical Instruments

Restoring an historical instrument requires a particularly respectful approach. Our aim is to preserve as much as possible of the instrument’s original material, history and characteristics, while allowing it to return to good playing condition and, whenever possible, recover its acoustic qualities.

We undertake restorations of varying scope, from maintenance and specific interventions to more extensive restoration work. Each instrument is carefully examined beforehand in order to determine what needs to be done and to identify the most appropriate solutions.

Repairs and Maintenance

We also carry out general repairs and maintenance work necessary for the proper preservation and functioning of instruments, including structural repairs, gluing, bridge and soundpost work, fingerboards, tailpieces, setup, replacement of components and general maintenance.

Regular maintenance helps preserve an instrument over time and can prevent minor issues from developing into more serious problems.

Setup and Tonal Development

The setup of an instrument is an essential part of its performance. Precise adjustments to the setup, bridge, soundpost, strings and other components can have a significant influence on an instrument’s response and tonal qualities.

We offer personalised setups according to the instrument and the musician’s needs, paying particular attention to response, projection, register balance, tonal richness and playing comfort.

When the instrument allows for it, we can also work on improving and developing its tonal qualities, always with respect for its construction, history and individual character.

Our Work, in Service of the Musician

Every instrument is different, and every musician has their own expectations. We therefore favour a personalised, attentive and transparent approach.

Our aim is not simply to repair or build an instrument, but to create the conditions that allow the musician to get the very best from it: an instrument that is responsive, balanced, expressive and a pleasure to play.

From the making of a new viol to the restoration of an historical instrument, from routine maintenance to fine acoustic adjustments, we place our craftsmanship at the service of music, instruments and the people who play them.

_________________

Our shop was born from a passion for viols and bowed string instruments, and above all, for the people who bring them to life every day: musicians and enthusiasts.

We aim to create a place where you can find strings, accessories and products specifically suited to your instrument, whether you play the viol, violin, viola, cello, or another bowed string instrument.

We carefully select our products, with a focus on quality, reliability and the pleasure of playing. Because a string, bow or accessory can sometimes make a real difference to the way an instrument responds, sounds and feels under the fingers.

Whether you are a professional musician, amateur, student or simply passionate about bowed string instruments, our goal is to offer products that we would be happy to use ourselves.

We also want to create a friendly, personal shop where you can take the time to discover products, compare different options and, when needed, get advice.

A passion above all

Bowed string instruments have something special about them: they are both objects of great historical richness and deeply living instruments. A viol or violin is not simply meant to be played — it is discovered, understood, cared for and shaped together with its musician.

This is the world we want to share through our selection.

Welcome to our shop, and enjoy exploring!
